With an ever-growing appreciation and interest in products that are handmade, Artisan Resource® provides a vital link between those who create and those who are in search of special artisan-made items to inspire and sell in their place of business.
Artisan Resource is a semi-annual trade show held concurrently with NY NOW®. Artisan Resource is a unique and professional venue for artisans worldwide to present their product and production capabilities at export terms from their country of origin. Artisan Resource is managed by Emerald Expositions and organized with the assistance of ByHand Consulting. Exhibitors are carefully vetted according to a set level of standards, including focus on design innovation, cultural preservation, social enterprise, and sustainability. The upcoming Show will be held August 16 – 19 at the Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94.
Over 8,000 qualified buyers attend the Show. Among the attendees are import buyers representing large and volume retail stores, national retail chains, museum stores, and wholesale companies, including ABC Carpet &Home, Anthropologie, Calvin Klein, Gaiam, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, One King’s Lane, Target, Neiman Marcus, Pottery Barn, Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford Design, Vivaterra, Walmart, Walt Disney, West Elm, TJX, Williams Sonoma, Wisteria, Levi Strauss, and many others. Special country pavilions for several nations will exhibit, including Cambodia, Ecuador, Ghana, Indonesia Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Tunisia. The momentum of the show continues to build from one edition to the next and the number of exhibitors has doubled over the course of the last two editions. Here is a partial listing of August 2014 exhibitors.
Product categories represented at the upcoming show include gift, home décor, textiles, tabletop, stationery, jewelry, and fashion accessories. Materials represented include textiles, ceramics, glass, metal, leather, natural fibers, recycled materials and paper.
The allure of “artisan-made” stems from the aesthetic beauty, quality craftsmanship, and distinctive qualities. Artisan made typically means groups of skilled craftsmen, utilizing traditional techniques passed down in their families through generations, hand craft items with beautiful details. Some of the methods and/or techniques used by artisans include crochet, embroidery, knitting, weaving, hand dyeing, batik technique, ikat technique, hand beading, wire wrapping, metal-smithing, macramé knotting, woodblock printing, and screen-printing. Some techniques, however unique and admired, have reached a risk of extinction if the demand for the final product is not sufficient or these artisans have not had the means to reach a buyer or retailer where their products can be sold.
An end product, which results when something is handmade is indicative of the precious time and treasured skills applied in the process used. Artisan Resource aims to connect the artisans with the buyers who will value these items and share them with the world, ensuring employment for the artisans and ensuring a longer life for their craft.
